Connecting Physical Capacity to Vocational Reality (SSA Exertional Scales) - The Fit4Work Screen

One of the most valuable aspects of the Fit4Work Screen is how seamlessly its findings translate into standardized vocational frameworks—specifically the Social Security Administration (SSA) Exertional Levels of Work. When we evaluate a student using the Fit4Work Screen, we aren’t just measuring how many pounds a student can lift in isolation; we are determining where their current functional capacity aligns across these standardized levels:

1. Sedentary Work

  • SSA Definition: Lifting no more than 10 lbs at a time; occasionally lifting/carrying small articles like files or small tools. Primarily sitting, with occasional walking or standing.

  • Fit4Work Alignment: The screen identifies students who thrive in bench-work, fine-motor assembly, digital tasks, or office roles where sitting tolerance and fine motor endurance are the primary physical demands.

2. Light Work

  • SSA Definition: Lifting up to 20 lbs occasionally, with frequent lifting or carrying of up to 10 lbs. Requires a good deal of walking or standing, or sitting while operating arm/leg controls.

  • Fit4Work Alignment: Many entry-level community jobs fall here (e.g., retail stockers, greeters, light custodial work, food service prep). The screen tests standing tolerance, light carrying capacity, and postural transitions over extended periods.

3. Medium Work

  • SSA Definition: Lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally, with frequent lifting or carrying of up to 25 lbs.

  • Fit4Work Alignment: Evaluates higher-demand tasks such as commercial cleaning, warehouse stocking, groundskeeping, or hospitality roles.

4. Heavy & Very Heavy Work

  • SSA Definition: Heavy work involves lifting up to 100 lbs occasionally (50 lbs frequently); Very Heavy involves lifting objects over 100 lbs with frequent lifting of 50+ lbs.

  • Fit4Work Alignment: Many students at this level are engaged in community strength programs and have the physical skills that they need for work.

Translating Physical Data into Collaborative Action

By mapping the results of the Fit4Work Screen directly to these exertional scales, we give the entire transition team—special educators, vocational coordinators, job coaches, and families—a common language.

Instead of stating that a student “has weak lower extremities,” the team can clearly state:


“Based on the Fit4Work Screen, Alex currently demonstrates physical capacity at the Light Work exertional level (lifting up to 15 lbs dynamically and standing for up to 30-minute intervals). To access jobs at the Medium Work level, targeted interventions will focus on trunk stability, lifting mechanics, and standing stamina.”

This clear alignment allows us to:

  • Target Specific Interventions: Physical therapists can design goal-oriented physical conditioning that directly prepares a student for the exertional demands of their preferred job area.

  • Match Jobs Accurately: Job developers can match students with placements where physical demands fit their current capacity, preventing early burn-out or physical strain.

  • Advocate for Meaningful Accommodations: Identify exact areas where ergonomic modifications or assistive devices can bridge the gap between a student’s current capacity and a job’s exertional requirements.
